Simulation flow for the VR program

Actual view is from inside the cabin; the participant does not control steering or braking. Rail playback keeps every trial identical so differences in timing come from the participant, not the vehicle.

Process flow per participant
  1. Observe traffic situation from the driver viewpoint
  2. Check road by moving head (left / right / front)
  3. Decision selection: GO / WAIT / ABORT on the controller stick
  4. Check decision result

Session 20–30 min per person including interview · 5 min interval · HPM meeting room.

Post interview
  1. When did you notice the motorcycle?
  2. Why did you select GO / WAIT / ABORT?
  3. Which information influenced you most: speed, distance, or time?
  4. Did the assistance change your decision?
  5. Was the warning too early, appropriate, or too late?
  6. What additional information would help?
Research question

Does safety information change when and how a driver recognizes a motorcycle and makes a Go/No-Go decision?

Not a driving simulator: a controlled decision-elicitation instrument producing clean, timestamped behavioural data against the Decision-Margin Model. Value is measurement fidelity and data integrity, not visual realism.

Condition 1 · Car without assistance

Participant follows a slower vehicle; motorcycle approaches from the opposite lane; GO / WAIT / ABORT. Judgement by visible distance, perceived speed, road position, available gap.

Condition 2 · Car with assistance

Same scenario with staged information: motorcycle approaching → approaching quickly → insufficient passing time, need to wait. A "safe to go" state is never shown.

Condition 3 · Motorcycle without assistance

Participant rides the motorcycle position in the same traffic, judging on their own. Enables 4W vs 2W user comparison.

Variables
Main Approaching motorcycle speed, 30 → 100 kph in +10 kph steps
Fixed Straight 2-way 2-lane road no median · clear daytime · lead vehicle · initial position · assistance location and format
Optional Near vs far initial distance
HMI staging (IOCM, >10 km/h, up to 30 m) + sound warning
StandbyKeep Focus · other vehicle rel. speed >30 kph, distance >20 m
AlertBe Aware · rel. speed >30 kph, distance 15–20 m
WarningDon't Maneuver, Reduce Speed · rel. speed >30 kph, distance <15 m

DAA (0–10 km/h, up to 20 m): Get Ready 5–20 m · Stop <5 m. In the prototype, stages are triggered by TTC (tweakable) so they are testable at overtaking closing speeds.

Respondents
15 × 4W users · 15 × 2W users · 30 total
Male/female combined · 22–55 y.o.
Daily 2W/4W commute · >2 years driving
Excluded: motion sickness history, visual impairment
Analysis framework
Speed · how quickly the conflict develops
Distance / gap · space before paths overlap
TTC · time remaining before the conflict
Recognition & decision time · time to notice, judge, decide
Activity schedule · Apr 2026 – Mar 2027
Study proposal → Vendor study & admin process → VR program development → Trial & evaluation → Fieldwork → Data process → Analysis & reporting
Milestones: GIIAS 30 Jul–9 Aug, GJAW (TBC), mid report, DIR/MG reviews. Week-level bars from the deck to be confirmed.
